The Cairo Alexandria Desert Road, or Cairo Gate, is a major highway in Egypt connecting the cities of Cairo and Alexandria. It is the nation's longest highway, stretching approximately 218 miles (351 km) in length. It is also the most important artery connecting the two major cities of Egypt.
Constructed between 1947 and 1951, the road crosses the desert, starts at Cairo and ends at Alexandria on the Mediterranean Coast. Along its route, the road passes through lush Nile Delta farmlands with crops such as cotton, sugar cane, and rice. The highway also features mountainous terrain and some notably challenging inclines.
The Cairo Alexandria Desert Road has drastically improved travel time between the two cities, reducing it from eight hours to only four. The road also makes it much easier for goods to be transported between Egypt’s two largest cities.
In order to make driving on the highway safer and easier, numerous safety and infrastructure initiatives have been undertaken. These include the installation of new road signs and guard rails, improved lighting and lane markings, and geological surveys along the route.
